Sean O’Malley vs Frankie Edgar in November?
Veteran mixed martial arts journalist Ariel Helwani reported Thursday on his Helwani Nose Substack page that the promotion is trying to put together the matchup between the eighth-ranked 135-pounder and unranked but uber-popular “Sugar.”
“UFC wants to book Sean O’Malley versus Frankie Edgar next. Maybe even for the MSG show on Nov. 6. TBD on if it will happen,” Helwani wrote.
O’Malley has gone public recently with his UFC frustrations. In an episode of his “The BrO’Malley Show” he referenced the bout in New York, and had some unkind words for UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby as well.
“I don’t even know if I’m supposed to say this. I was talking to my manager and he was talking to Sean Shelby and Sean Shelby was mad at me,” O’Malley said. “Dude, I don’t want to fight in New York. It’s far. The taxes are ridiculous, and Tim has no-gi or no, ADCC trials that weekend. And he told me that before I even potentially had a fight. So that’s his thing and I’m not gonna say, ‘No, I have a fight we’re doing it.’ Especially, when I can fight a month later in Vegas.
“Sean Shelby was just like mad and [said] ‘Fine go hang out with 6ix9ine,’ and just acting like a f*cking tool, dude.”
It remains to be seen if the fight will be on the November card or at all, but a matchup featuring O’Malley (14-1) versus a legend in Edgar (24-9-1) is intriguing nonetheless.
“Sugar” last fought in July when he put up historic striking numbers in his win over short-notice replacement Kris Moutinho at UFC 264. He has won two straight after suffering his first career loss to Marlon Vera at UFC 252 last year.
Edgar was last seen on the wrong end of a flying knee knockout loss to Cory Sandhagen in February. The former lightweight champion has lost three of his last four and incurred KO defeats in two of those setbacks.
UFC 268 takes place on November 6, inside Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event is set to be headlined by a welterweight title fight rematch between champion Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington.
