Michelle Waterson is hungry to make more noise in the UFC strawweight division.

At UFC on ABC 3, Waterson meets Amanda Lemos, a fellow top 15 competitor in the co-main bout. The event takes place at UBS Arena in Long Island, N.Y., which is exciting for Waterson (18-9 MMA, 6-5 UFC), because she gets to perform in front of a crowd again.

Waterson is coming off back-to-back main event bouts at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. She picked up a split decision win over Angela Hill in a Fight of the Night battle at UFC on ESPN+ 35, followed by a unanimous decision loss to Marina Rodriguez at UFC on ESPN 24. “The Karate Hottie” hopes to rebound against Lemos (11-2-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in a matchup she anticipates will be a striking affair.

“She likes to stand and bang,” Waterson said. “I’ve been fighting nothing but killers. So, we’re both jockeying for position. The strawweight division is up in the air right now after Carla (Esparza) was able to defeat Rose (Namajunas). So, there’s a lot of opportunity and all of us see it. We’re chomping at the bit.”

Esparza regained the strawweight title by defeating Namajunas at UFC 274. With the changing of the guard, Waterson believes there is no time like the present to go on a run for a shot at the title.

“I feel like the strawweight division is one of the most stacked divisions on the female roster, and so, you have to look out for everybody really,” Waterson said. “I would say from No. 1 to No. 15. Weili (Zhang) got to the championship super fast and it’s because we’re all super hungry. So, you just have to make sure you’re paying attention to everybody on the roster.

“But that’s been kind of the story of my journey since I’ve been with the UFC. I’ve fought nothing but killers, all top 10 fighters every single time, and I embrace it. I embrace the challenge. I freaking love it. That’s why I fight.”
